Countries have an important role in modern society since they help to shape political boundaries and the planet.
At 66.5° South and 0° West this puts Iceton in the Southern, Western, and Eastern Hemispheres. To be more exact, Iceton is on the Prime Meridian below the Equator North of Antarctica on the Antarctic Circle.
This far south, storms are very fierce. Snow storms are terrible. Sometimes they might break satellite dishes and overload heating coils, most of the time they just give us 8-9 inches of snow. A hail storm is just like a snow storm only instead of snow, ice falls from the sky and causes our roofs to collapse. The only thing these storms leave behind is disaster in the form of downed light posts, broken solar panels, and shattered wind turbines. The weather condition of fog isn’t a true threat it is just a nuisance, all fog does is makes students late for school and boats grounded until the fog clears. One of the more dangerous weather types is high wind. With winds of up to 55 miles per hour it is dangerous enough to ground the boats, stop school, and in rare instances blows away houses.
As you can guess we have a cold arctic climate. We have avoided most of the wind by building igloo like houses and huge basements. There is only one exception, the schools, the schools are the only buildings that are built using wood, and they resemble large log cabins. All of our food comes from the ocean. There are many varieties of fish right of the coast, the species of fish include but are not limited to: capelin, arctic cod, and sand lance. Whales that live in Asteroid Bay are only Orca whales that come to this area because of the fish, the fish come here to eat krill which in turn eat algae.
Humans came to this area because of the resources found in a single 300 ton meteorite that struck Earth 16 million years ago. The metals found in the meteor are gold, copper, iron, and nickel. The resources naturally found in this area are fish, saltwater, ice, and permafrost. Luckily scientists have come up with a way to turn saltwater into sea salt and freshwater.
The most wonderful things here are the six month long sunlight periods. The solar panels use these periods to charge 20,000 volt batteries that are in the basement of every house so that the houses have power during the six months of darkness. Every house is required to use at least 3 solar panels.
For recreation, the only things available are winter based activities. Some of the more popular sports are ice skating and kayaking. Iceton holds the rank of 1st place in ice skating championships out of 50 other top countries. Kayaking here is hard. You need to have a steady paddle and a fast reaction time. Two major challenges in these deadly waters are the fog and currents; fog blocks your sight and the currents pull you toward the islands. An activity almost everyone likes is hiking. On the ice hiking is a lot more challenging and fun. A guide takes 10 people on a 2 mile walk around the island. Normally nothing bad happens on the trip, but what if someone trips and breaks his arm on a chunk of ice. The guide carries a First Aid kit just in case of such an occasion. Don’t worry he is also fully certified for C.P.R. and the Heimlich Maneuver. Most people that go on hikes are from other countries and were on the merchant ocean liners.
If you come here we all have equal rights because of our democratic government. Information moves around in the form of imported books, newspapers, and cww (country wide web) only the president can talk face to face with other countries’ leaders using a satellite that he put in space. The main defense for this country is nature, but just in case of invasion, we have a 50 man military and 2 steel plated boats with 2 torpedo tubes and 2 torpedoes per tube.
The pollution that affects us is a hole in the ozone layer, heat pollution from electrical appliances, and light pollution. The hole in the ozone layer isn’t our fault, it just affects the community.
We massively depend on other countries for food and water. Normally the population is 210 people, but with 30% of our food imported we can support up to 300 people. We also get 58% of our drinking water from import. In return, the countries that give us food and water get some gold or nickel. Our currency is steel and iron coins. The steel coins are worth twice as much as the iron coins. Iron coins are worth about1.8 American dollars.
For transportation on ground all we have are snow mobiles in stock; in fact they are the only land transportation you can find here. Seagoing vessels are easier to come by. People use canoes or kayaks for personal transport. If you’re going on a fishing trip, get a single masted boat at the harbor. All the personal boats are oar powered. The fishing boats are powered with a sail; the wind blows into the sail and off you go.
The 3 schools are the Elementary School, Middle School, and High School. The Elementary School hosts grades K-4, the Middle School hosts grades 5-7, and High School hosts grades 8-12 and college. The curriculum consists of math, science, social studies and language arts. Band starts in 5th grade and boating starts in 9th grade. When people turn 18 years old, they can get a job as a miner or fisher as they progress through school. Depending on their grades, they can get promotions and new job opportunities. The jobs are miner, fisher, refiner, captain, hiking guide, musician, soldier, general, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, rigger, snow mobile fixer, snow mobile/boat builder, sales man, manager, and president.

Hello, I represent the townspeople of Crooked Corners. We live in the middle of nowhere and it gets pretty cold and windy here, too. Unfortunately, all we have to eat is snow in the winter and rain in the summer.
Historically we grew a variety of potatoes hereabouts, but a couple years back there was a terrible blight that destroyed entire crops. In order to eradicate the blight, government officials introduced a foreign species of beetle that not only ate the fungus but all the nutrients in the soil as well. Then the beetles started looking at the citizens with hungry eyes. Luckily those pernicious little rascals are too small to do much damage to a human, but their bites can itch for a week! And they smart something awful the first few minutes.
Because it got so cold last fall, the beetles moved on (I think they're headed toward a place called Pewaukee), but many of the people here also moved away to avoid malnutrition and because they fear springtime, when the beetles might come back.
While reading this fascinating entry about Iceton, by the way, I became envious of your town's gold and copper. I was happy to come upon the information about your military capacity because it gives me the ability to formulate an attack in order that I may conquer your small populace and steal your vast wealth. With it I will rebuild my own town and perhaps have you over for dinner... should you survive the war.
Thank you!
Uncle Erik
