Everything follows a cycle. Some cycles are thought to be helpful while others are known to be destructive but all of them repeat. The short story “The Circuit” proves that if you forget who you are, there are dire consequences.
There are many natural cycles, many of them are helpful but some are destructive. Cycles that are considered helpful to mankind are the water cycle and the carbon cycle. The water cycle is helpful since it helps to clean water and replenishes the water of lakes and rivers. However the carbon cycle purifies helps to purify the atmosphere by causing the water and the ground to absorb the carbon. The carbon then sinks to the bottom of the ocean where it moves with the continental plates until it sinks under the crust and burns up in the mantle. The same thing happens on land except the carbon is actually being absorbed by plants. The members of the family in “The Circuit” are migrant workers which means that they came from a foreign country to work in the U.S. They are very poor and the family has no way of gaining status and money unless their children go to school, in order to gain an education. The cycle that the family is in is; move, work, move, work, move… Death is another cycle, except death makes way for life so in some ways it is helpful but at the same time death causes grieving making it terrible. This story connects to cycles since the family has a pattern of; move, work, move, work, move… while cycles keep going in the same way; spring, summer, fall, winter, spring, summer, fall…
Although the story is important, it’s mode of literature defines it. This short story is a tragedy, although at first I thought it was a comedy since the family was in a normal life. First the world is in conflict because the family keeps on having to move in search of a job. Then the family finds a place that they can work at for a while and the main character goes to school giving him ascension to power. Next he learns how to read but in the process he forgets that he will eventually move on and who he is; his major flaw. Finally he falls because he has to move on. This story teaches the reader not to forget who you are or there will be dire consequences.
Cycles are a natural part of life, only not all of them are helpful. When you are given a choice to rise to power and take the power, just consider remembering who you are.
